Bitti (Kriti Sanon) is a young contemporary girl in Uttar Pradesh, who works in complaint department of electricity board and is the apple of her father’s eye. Like most Indian mothers, Bitti’s mother wants to see her daughter get married to a nice man from a good family. Bitti, however, wants a husband who understands her and more importantly, who accepts her exactly the way she is. A suitor comes but after knowing his disgusting mindset, she lies about not being a virgin and gets rejected. Her mother gets irritated with constant rejections but father understands her. She gets heartbroken after hearing her parents conversation and later pours her heart out before her father who consoles and cheer her. That night she leaves her house and despite not knowing to go anywhere takes a train. Meanwhile, for time pass she also buys a book from the platform. She feels she has found that special someone when she reads a book called ‘Bareilly Ki Barfi’ and finds herself described and accepted in the pages of the book. She returns to her home same night. She longs to meet the writer and thus one day decides to search for the supposed writer of the book, Pritam Vidrohi (Rajkummar Rao) She, along with her best friend Rama, goes back to the same book store from where she had brought that book and asks about its writer. The owner, in turn, takes her name and address to inform them in case he gets the writer. The book shop owner leads her to Chirag Dubey (Ayushmann Khurana), who owns a printing press and who helped publish the book. What Bitti doesn’t know, is that Chirag is, in fact, the true author of the book. The bookshop owner, also the best friend of Chirag, knew that he is the actual writer. Chirag wrote that book 5 years ago, when he had a heartbreak when his girlfriend Bubbly married someone else. He wrote that book describing his girlfriend Bubbly and their love story. But since giving his own name as the writer might destroy his ex-girlfriend’s reputation, he coaxes his other meek so-called friend “Pritam Vidrohi” to have his name as the writer of the book. Vidrohi agrees but gets so scared of the possible future scenarios, that he leaves the city without telling anyone. 5 years gone, that no one had purchased a single copy of that book except Bitti on that day. Bitti tries to get Vidrohi’s whereabouts from Chirag but Chirag successfully manages to agree her on writing letters to that writer instead meeting personally. She writes letters, give it to Chirag to send it to Vidrohi and Chirag answer it for her as he is the original writer. In the meantime, both becomes good friends. But now Bitti is getting upset that despite repeated requests Vidrohi is not agreeing to meet her, and requests Chirag to arrange a meeting just once. Chirag agrees and as he has fallen for Bitti and decides to tell her the truth, that he is the actual writer. But later he learns that Bitti’s mother hates that writer for spoiling their daughter’s mind and thus decides not to tell the truth, instead search for Vidrohi and make him the scapegoat. They hunt down Vidrohi, who now works as a salesman in a saree shop and blackmails him to do as per their wish else they will tell his mother that he is a mere salesman not some big manager as she thinks. Vidrohi reluctantly agrees. They give a makeover to him and teaches him to behave, look and act exactly opposite of Bitti’s liking. On first meet with Bitti, she gets repelled by Vidrohi but her friend Rama gets impressed by him. But on second meet, Vidrohi impresses Bitti’s parents, irritating Chirag. Chirag also misleads Bitti’s parents by informing them that Vidrohi is a divorcee. Chirag tries to help Vidrohi propose to Rama as he wants to get Vidrohi out of the way but Vidrohi comes to know from Rama about Chirag’s lies to Bitti’s parents. So he decides to really woo Bitti and this irritates Chirag but later on he realizes that Bitti has fallen for Vidrohi. So he decides to help Vidrohi get married to Bitti. He writes a final letter about his true feelings for Bitti and informs Vidrohi to read it aloud in everyone’s presence on the marriage day. Vidrohi cannot do so as his voice is groggy on that day hence Chirag himself reads the letter and finally Bitti agrees to marry Chirag after explaining that Vidrohi had informed her about the real author of Barielly ki Barfi. Finally Chirag marries Bitti and they live happily ever after.
