Minor Mishaps is the story of a family in which family relations are put to the test after the mother dies. It is a collective tale in which we follow the lives of the four leads: 1) John, the father, who has a serious heart condition but risks his life by sticking to his job as a hospital porter; 2) Tom, his son, who is in the process of losing his wife and children because his career as a building contractor overshadows everything else; 3) Eva, the elder daughter, trying to make her way as an artist but “scared shitless” whenever she faces a blank canvas; and 4) Marianne, the younger daughter, who gets a new job running the staff canteen at an accountancy partnership and despite her inexperienced, awkward behavior initiates an affair with a colleague. All four try to find themselves and one another, and all four learn that families aren’t something you choose, but something you just have.

Adult Chinese-American siblings Alexander, Liz, Victoria and Meimei reluctantly converge on their hometown of Seattle after their mother, Linda Xiao, passes away from her bout with cancer, about which they didn’t even know until after her passing. “Reluctant” as they all disliked their mother – who they called the “Dragon Lady” as she showed them little love while she was alive and who pitted each against the others as they grew up – and have been estranged from each other because of it. Despite each having successful professional lives – Alexander being a cosmetic surgeon, Liz a magazine columnist, Victoria a real estate agent, and Meimei an actress in Chinese ninja movies – each sibling carries personal baggage, much associated with their mother’s ways. Married Alexander, much like his now deceased father before him, has a mistress on the side, about which his ex-beauty pageant queen wife Cindy knows. Liz’s son Sam passed away, the stress and grief from which led to her breaking-up with her Caucasian husband Michael. Victoria was forced to break-up with the only man she ever loved because he was black, that relationship which produced a son, Jason. And lesbian Meimei and her partner Dede want to have a baby, and are looking for a sperm donor. Mrs. Xiao’s last wish was for her family to come together to hold a traditional week long Chinese funeral for her. Being brought up “western” (with a couple of them not even knowing their native tongue), the siblings must rely on the Xiao’s longtime housekeeper and caregiver, a Jewish woman named Viola, to tell them how to proceed with the funeral. As the week progresses, the siblings learn of many things not previously known about their mother and their family in general, some of it having to do with another funeral attendee from Beijing, a man named Chow Lin. But the biggest secret of the the family is kept by Viola, who reveals all, with some help by the spirit of Mrs. Xiao, by week’s end.

Born Christmas Day 1960, Zac Beaulieu is the fourth of five sons of Gervais and Laurianne Beaulieu. Zac feels somewhat disconnected to his brothers, all of whom are different from each other. They include the bookworm Christian who is the eldest, the dumb jock Antoine who is third, and the youngest Yvan. But Zac has the most contempt for his second eldest brother, the shiftless druggie Raymond. To his devout Catholic mother, Zac is her miracle son, both for being born the same day as Jesus Christ (a fact which Zac has always hated), and because a Tupperware-selling mystic once told her that he has the power to heal. Laurianne has always coddled Zac, the two who have a special if unspoken bond. But Zac wants more to please his father, who wants more than anything in his sons that they grow up to be man’s men and not sissies. As Zac goes through his mid-teens to early twenties, Zac isn’t sure if he can live up to the ideals of either his mother or especially his father. A young man with stress-induced asthma, Zac just wants to be what he considers normal, which includes getting rid of his asthma. But more importantly, he wants to get rid of the underlying thoughts that he has and which most going through puberty have, but that for him are becoming more prevalent as he grows older.
